A group of divers find themselves in deep trouble with a drug lord after they come upon the illicit cargo of a sunken airplane.
Review
Was there a plot involved outside of good looking people swimming around half-naked in a beautiful ocean? I’m not sure there was a point, and frankly after the first thirty minutes all I wanted was more Paul Walker and Jessica Alba in the ocean searching for treasure, or just hanging out. The necessity of meaning had dissipated after the first few scenes. Suddenly someone burst my pleasure bubble and decided to throw in a drug smuggling scheme that involved every single person that had crossed paths with the camera up to that point, and now the movie was a suspense-action flick? Bah-hum-bug I say!
We are clued in with the title and lead actors that there won’t be anything substantial about this movie. Jessica Alba and Paul Walker together is not exactly DeNiro and Streep together. However, each have their redeeming qualities. Both are fantastic to look at and have a charisma and some acting ability so long as not too much range is required. Paul Walker has struck me as a Keanu Reeves type. Most of the time he does best if he sticks to that surfer “dude” kinda persona, but every once in awhile a good action role will suit him, like “Running Scared.” Into The Blue was the perfect surfer persona for him, and Alba as his eye candy girlfriend was the perfect compliment.
This movie would have sufficed as a simplistic story about hot people searching for treasure with maybe a few twists here and there to make it a little complex, but like every other obnoxious director they overcompensate everything with too much useless action, too many betrayals, too many twists and turns, and just too much. It’s all so contrived it’s intolerable. Into The Blue was a pretty mindless movie, but I was at least initially enjoying the mindless and then it split in half and turned into a crime caper, with really pointless events. I could have cared less how the movie ended because once the bad guys showed up I was too bored.
After accepting the fact that not much was going to happen and the movie shifted gears, it was difficult to forgive Into The Blue. It seriously got to the point where if one more person double-crossed another person I was going to throw something at the TV. There was not high expectations here, and to teeter dangerously below those pathetic expectations is a pretty shameful thing. I suppose I’d watch those first thirty minutes if I caught them on TV again, but I’d quickly change the channel when the nonsense started. Into The Blue was a confused mess.
