I’ve heard a lot of people say they’d like to see William H. Macy in that role and that’s just hard for me to accept even though I consider myself a fan of Macy. There are few times when an actor makes a character and that character actually makes the movie and that’s what Spacey did with Lestor.

I think Bentley’s role in this was just a prediction of what the “Emo” point of teenage view would be to come. There was a heavy transition from music and film in the proceeding years after this was released. His character may not be as prevalent now, but I think the ideal of where his characters persona evolved from was at least interesting, but I agree, my least favorite part of the film.

Benning, Cooper, and Gallagher were phenomenal supporters.

Great review. I just watched American Beauty a few weekends ago. One thing I thought was interesting is I still loved and connected with the main Lester storyline. Just brilliant. But over time I think less and less of the daughter’s storyline with Ricky. I just don’t like his character, don’t find him redeeming in anyway. Thankfully the non Kevin Spacey movie content is limited. Also, LOVE Peter Gallagher as Buddy Kane. That sex scene is just funny.
