Having some fun convo’s about worst movies ever @ M.Carter’s kick ass site I started thinking about movies that I find myself laughing hysterically at, or getting deep amusement out of, that other people look at as being rather serious. Back in the college years (if it were with Zack and Kelly it would have been far smoother) I often would stop at the theatre by myself in between class and work (that happened to be Blockbuster Video-a movieaholic for LIFE!). I remember seeing American Beauty and twenty minutes in laughing my ass off at the dark comedy and people shooting me the most repugnant looks, as though I wasn’t appreciating the seriousness of the film. I glared right back at their clear stupidity for not seeing how brilliantly smart and funny the movie actually was. I remember similar experience when I saw Kill Bill Vol. 1. At this point I was certain people that went to see a Tarantino flick knew what they were getting into, but yet there I was alone in the crowd laughing my ass off, getting dirty looks. Just because there was blood didn’t mean it wasn’t funny! Then I was mad and assumed the basic crowd hadn’t seen American Psycho either, which should
be in the comedy section. Sure, it’s dark, but that movie is as complexly hilarious as they come. For a lot of years I just thought I had a dark sense of humor, but I’ve learned many people have this same perspective. So what are the movies that have done it for you? Made you laugh, but you kind of wondered it if was supposed to be funny or you were just strange?

I laughed my ass off during one of the near-end scenes of Daybreakers. It was a mob of soldiers just attacking each other, over and over again, but done in a wide shot and slow motion. My buddy and I couldn’t stop laughing and the eleven other people in the theatre just turned and stared at us.
The mere fact that you say this is funny has me epically intrigued.
Like you said, American Psycho was hilarious. Other movies I can think of: Battle Royale, You, Me and Everyone we know, In Bruges, and of course Twilight
In Bruges! Another excellent one. I have not seen Battle Royale.
I thought of a few more.
Raising Arizona
Burn After Reading
The Burbs
AND
Heathers!
“Happiness” had me in stitches, and I loaned it out to a few friends before realizing that’s not the kind of humor the average moviegoer appreciates. The same goes for all of Todd Solondz’s movies, really — they’re terribly, suffocatingly depressing, but he peppers them with humor that’s so dark I think only 10 people worldwide like it.
Oh, and thanks for the site mention!
Twilight.
A Serious Man was absolutely hilarious, and so was Cold Souls. Castor: thanks for mentioning In Bruges- totally brilliant.
Oh, and let’s not forget G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra.
Twilight was a joke. I’m glad i’m not the only one who thought so.
I would add Little Miss Sunshine to this list. I don’t know if it was supposed to be funny but I laughed a lot.
