Sadly, Khan will not be making an appearance as the villain in Star Trek 2 according to . Their source also shares that the film’s story is finalized and agreed upon. Surprisingly the story will not “focus on a traditional villain type at all”. Instead the sequel will feature character(s) from Star Trek’s first season.
According to the source at Badass, “It’s definitely a character that will make fans of The Original Series excited. Think along the lines of Harry Mudd or Trelane or Gary Mitchell or the Talosians or the Horta… Actually it’s one of those that I named.”
In case you are not familiar with these characters here is a quick overview of the characters named above:
Harry Mudd is a conman and smuggler of women who was on the original show twice.
Trelane is a godlike character who enjoyed toying with the crew of the Enterprise and is a few centuries behind on Earth’s culture with a planet decorated in 17th century fashion.
Gary Mitchell is an Enterpise crew member that goes insane in the second pilot episode.
Talosians are a group of bulbous headed aliens that appeared in The Cage and Menagerie episodes.
The Horta is a space rock that was responsible for killing a group of miners.
Since Khan is definitely out, which one of the above villains would you like to see battle the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek 2?
Khan is awesome, but Khan = Ricardo Montalban, it’d be hard for me to buy into someone else filling that role. Of the ones they named I’m not too sure which I care for. To be honest I’m not keen on any of them. Though hopefully, like the last film, they’ll prove my worries wrong.

No one can do Khan but Montalban. Great decision, and frankly the only smart one– why bother trying to remake an iconic villain? Khan is probably the Trek villain to end all Trek villains for most, a sacred cow for the series if you will. Trying to recapture his glory would just be setting the film up for failure.
