Throwback Tuesday: Mute Witness (1994)

Mobster's Rating: What is it that makes a film ‘scary’? I don’t mean simple jump thrills or a little bit of goose-pimples. What I’m talking about is that tight-chest, metallic taste in the mouth, primal fear that gets a hold of you and doesn’t let go. It’s the kind of anxiety ... Read More

Mobster's Rating: “What is this, anyway, some kind of comic book? We got robots, we got cavemen, we got kung fu.” Some kind of comic book indeed. The Eliminators is a great example of why the 1980s was such a fun decade for movies. You could head into your local multiplex and ... Read More

Mobsters Rating: Would you like to hear a ghost story? Look around; the days are soon to shorten, the leaves to color and then fall, and the chill of winter is already intruding. There is really no better time for one. And this one, I promise, you will like. It’s a ... Read More

Tuesday Throwback: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973)
Posted On 18 Oct 2011 By Bartleby. Under 1973, 2.5 Stars (Noteworthy), 70's, Action, By Genre, By The Year, Fantasy, Horror, Reviews, Suspense/Thriller, Throwback Tuesday.
Mobster's Rating: Television movies were a far different beast in the 1970s than they are now. In fact, you don’t see the major networks wasting their time with them much anymore. But some 30 years ago, that was quite different. There were larger spaces to fill, not as many shows ... Read More

“Never stray from the path, never eat a windfall apple, and never trust a man whose eyebrows meet.” The Company of Wolves is either a child’s nightmarish fever dream, or a lurid fairy tale about the dark, shiny promise of adulthood. I’ve just finished watching the film for the first ... Read More

It's been years since I've seen Joe Dante’s The 'Burbs. As a kid I adored it—watching it so many times that the entire thing feels branded onto my cerebral cortex. Just the other day my wife and I were discussing the issue of lunatic neighbors, and the film came up. It ... Read More

This is one of the best family movies to come around, essentially ever. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry. Mrs. Doubtfire should be owned by just about everyone.

Throwback Tuesday: Poltergeist (1982)

At the age of twenty-nine I can still strongly attest that Poltergeist is the scariest movie I have ever seen. In it's best moments it feels like a nightmare you can't wake up from, with characters that could easily be you, special effects that still maintain their dignity, and an open curiosity about the paranormal and it's affects on the living.

With a classic tale, and Tim Burton's masterful way of creating palpable and ingenious characters with brilliant casting, makes this one of my favorite films of his, and certainly one of my favorite to get in the mood for Halloween with.

If television shows like the short lived Harsh Realm staring D.B. Sweeney was something that wet your science fiction palate, the engaging eXistenZ is a film that should quench your thirst.
